Inter Milan 5-1 AC Milan: Mkhitaryan helps Nerazzurri wipe the floor with in-form Milan

Inter Milan put on quite a show as Henrikh Mkhitaryan helped them defeat arch-rivals AC Milan 5-1 at San Siro Stadium.

Last season’s Champions League finalists, Inter, weren’t messing around in Derby della Madonnina as they inflicted a heavy loss on AC Milan.

Despite the freakish 5-1 result, AC Milan were actually in good form prior to the clash, having won all three previous matches. But so were Inzaghi’s men.

But prior form aside, Inter took the initiative early in the game as a Mkhitaryan strike saw the hosts Inter take the lead. However, that led to a barrage of Milan attacks, particularly from their left flank, as both Leao and Hernandez combined with Giroud’s excellent hold-up play to create quite a few chances.

Besides an early goal, Inter took the back seat for the majority of the first half as Milan were the team that controlled the majority of it. Milan had 72% possession in the first half and more than double the chances created.

Inter vs Milan: Mkhitaryan controlled every phase of the match

However, it was all for naught as a brilliant rocket of a strike from new by Marcus Thuram saw Inter’s lead doubled as Milan fumed over lost chances.

The second half seemed like the natural progression of the first as Milan amped up pressure on Inter’s half, resulting in a Rafael Leao goal. This was Milan’s first in their five previous outings against Inter.

However, instead of using the momentum to equalize the match, Milan saw the match slip from their grasp as Inzaghi started incorporating changes to his squad. With a bench boasting players like Pavard, Arnautovic, and Frattesi, Inzaghi was able to turn the tide in their favor. Soon Nerazzurri were able to score their third with a brilliant combination play from Calhanoglu, Martinez, and Mkhitaryan.

From that point on it was very much Inter’s game as Lautaro won them a clever penalty minutes after the third goal, which was then converted by Calhaonglu. Frattesi then killed off the match completely in the added time on a brilliant assist from Mkhitaryan.

Inter ended the match with the satisfaction of not only destroying their arch rivals but going top of the Serie A table with 12 points from four matches.
