Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: Matip gifts Spurs a last-gasp victory

Joel Matip delivered a heartbreaking finale to the thrilling contest between Liverpool and Tottenham where the Reds valiantly defended a draw even after going down to nine men.

Liverpool had a challenging match against Tottenham, where they played with their backs to the wall for most of the game. Despite their strong defensive efforts, they were unfortunate not to come away with at least one point.

The match began with Liverpool creating the first chances, with Cody Gakpo taking a shot that was saved by Guglielmo Vicario, and Andy Robertson’s rebound was also stopped. Curtis Jones had another opportunity, but Pape Matar Sarr blocked his shot.

The game took a turn when Jones was shown a red card for a high challenge on Yves Bissouma. Tottenham then had their first shot on goal, with James Maddison forcing a save from Alisson.

Richarlison had a chance for Tottenham, and Dejan Kulusevski set up a shot for him, but he missed. Liverpool thought they had scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Tottenham broke the deadlock when Maddison assisted Richarlison, who then passed to Son Heung-min for an easy goal. Richarlison hit the post later, but Destiny Udogie was offside when obstructing Alisson’s vision.

Liverpool managed to equalize just before halftime when Virgil van Dijk nodded down a cross for Gakpo to score. Salah had a chance to give Liverpool the lead, but his cross was diverted wide by Diaz.

In the second half, Maddison had a chance to put Tottenham ahead, but Alisson made a great save. He denied Son shortly after with another superb save.

Liverpool was reduced to nine men when Diogo Jota received two quick bookings for cynical challenges on Udogie.

Despite their strong defense, Liverpool conceded a late goal in added time when Pedro Porro’s cross was turned into the top corner by Matip.

This win for Tottenham was their first against Liverpool in North London since November 2012.
