Jeremie Frimpong close to agreeing Leverkusen contract extension

Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Jeremie Frimpong is close to signing a new contract with the club.

According to Sport Bild, Bayer Leverkusen after extending Argentine midfielder Exequiel Palacios’ contract, now is close to reaching an agreement with defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Kicker Magazine also reported that Leverkusen is in talks with Frimpong’s people, but they want to include a reasonable release clause in his contract.

“This is an important sign for the project and the team,” Alonso said when commenting on Palacios’ extension earlier this week, “We want to have a set of stable ideas. We’ve worked out important principles and continuing along this path is easier if there aren’t so many changes.”

“Maybe there will be other extensions too,” Xabi added, “I only know the target list. That’s not my area.”

The 22-year-old Dutch right-wing-back was linked with Arsenal and Manchester United during the summer. Leverkusen reportedly wanted to get around €50 million for him. He scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 34 league appearances last season.

Alonso’s side is at the top of the Bundesliga table with 16 points after six matches.
