A Ghanaian MP has apologised to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire after criticising him last year.
In December 2022, Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo criticised Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by referring him to as the “Economic Maguire”. He also said Maguire is “assisting opponents” on the pitch.
Isaac Adongo apologised to Maguire on Wednesday and hailed him as a “transformational footballer”. Adongo also said Manchester United’s defender has “turned the corner” and claimed Maguire has accepted his apology.
The MP told parliament on Wednesday: “You remember that last year I was very quick to call my big brother, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Harry Maguire. Mr Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire… Today, Maguire has turned the corner and is a transformational footballer. Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Mr Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United.”
After Maguire was booed by England fans, Gareth Southgate described his treatment as “ridiculous” and defended his performances.
Maguire’s mother also defended her son and said the abuse he has faced has been “disgraceful” and “unacceptable”.
