Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal: Wasteful Gunners lose top spot

Aston Villa achieved a historic milestone by securing a club-record 15th consecutive home league win with a 1-0 victory against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Aston Villa continue their amazing home form by felling yet another title challenger as Arteta’s Arsenal come short after going behind early.

Villa had a strong start, but Arsenal nearly took the lead as Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli executed consecutive switches of play. However, Saka’s subsequent cross to Martinelli resulted in a scuffed effort. Villa capitalized on the situation, with Leon Bailey making a run to the byline and delivering a ball for John McGinn, who turned and scored from 12 yards.

As Villa started to sit off, Arsenal gained confidence. Martinelli’s lob was cleared off the line by Diego Carlos, and replays suggested it might have been ruled out for offside. Martinelli then robbed Ezri Konsa, setting up chances for Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard, but Martinez made crucial saves.

Youri Tielemans’ pass found Ollie Watkins, whose chance was denied by David Raya. The offside flag went up, but replays showed a tight decision. Arsenal, after a VAR check, felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty for a challenge on Gabriel Jesus by Douglas Luiz.

A Saka corner punched by Martinez against Watkins’ head hit the post, and Carlos cleared Saliba’s header. Odegaard missed a chance, and Villa’s first second-half chance saw Raya save a shot from Lucas Digne.

Arsenal thought they equalized when Saka rounded Martinez and scored, but an offside flag denied the goal. Villa countered, with Diaby setting up Watkins, but Raya made another save.

In the final regulation minute, Arsenal had a goal disallowed as Havertz’s conversion of Saka’s cross hit his arm. Villa held on despite a late effort from Eddie Nketiah.

Villa now closes their gap with Arsenal, sending Liverpool to the top of the table with 37 points while Arsenal and Villans themselves follow suit with 36 and 35 points.
