Sporting director Deco disagrees with Xavi on his verdict of Barcelona’s loss to Girona

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco appears to hold a different opinion than Xavi following the 4-2 defeat to new La Liga leaders Girona on Sunday night.

Xavi’s team conceded an early goal at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, equalized through Robert Lewandowski, but Girona regained and extended their lead to 3-1. Ilkay Gundogan reduced the deficit in stoppage time, but Cristhian Stuani secured the victory for Girona finishing the match with a 4-2 scoreline.

Girona now leads La Liga approaching the winter break, taking advantage of Real Madrid dropping points against Real Betis, while Barcelona has slipped to fourth, behind Atletico Madrid, trailing by seven points.

“We haven’t played a good game. We haven’t been forceful,” Deco summarised to DAZN.

“I think we started well. [Girona] started winning. We tied. We were not strong enough to win the game. They were forceful, they knew what they were coming for and they have quality.

“We have tried but we couldn’t.”

Deco disagrees with Xavi on Barcelona being ‘forceful’

While Xavi acknowledged that Barcelona’s performance lacked forcefulness, his overall assessment seemed to be less critical in tone.

“It is not a bad game for Barca,” Xavi suggested.

“Last year we also suffered a blow, but we won two titles. This is a Barca under construction. Construction has this. You take one step back to take two steps forward.

“We deserved more, but that’s football. When you’re not so forceful in defence you receive a very hard blow. Girona has a great team. We haven’t played bad football. That lack of forcefulness, it costs us a heavy defeat that is difficult to digest but we have to get up.”
