Former Italy and Juventus star Giorgio Chiellini retires from football

Former Juventus and Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old Giorgio Chiellini confirmed his decision to retire from football with a post on Instagram. Chiellini played his last professional game in Saturday’s MLS Cup final, where his team LAFC lost to Columbus Crew. He won the MLS Cup with LAFC in his first season in MLS.

You have been the most beautiful and intense journey of my life,” wrote Chiellini.

You have been my everything. With you, I have travelled a unique and unforgettable path. But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges and write further important and exciting pages of life.”

Chiellini started his career with Livorno in 2000 and then joined Roma in 2002. He played in 561 matches from 2005 to 2022 for Juventus.

Chiellini scored 27 goals in 430 Serie A matches and won nine Serie A titles and five Coppa Italia. Chiellini also reached the Champions League final twice, in 2015 and 2017 with Juventus,

The legendary defender played 117 games for Italy and was part of the team that won the Euro 2020 by beating England in the final.
