Former Atletico Madrid player reveals disrespectful Simeone’s nickname for Messi

Former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has revealed Diego Simeone’s special nickname for Lionel Messi during his time at Barcelona.

Filipe Luis played for Atletico Madrid on two spells, first from 2010 to 2014 and then from 2015 to 2019. The 38-year-old Luis announced his retirement from professional football in November.

In his recent interview, Luis revealed that Diego Simeone wouldn’t use Lionel Messi’s real name as he didn’t want players to be afraid before games.

He told Marca: “At Atleti, Simeone put four players on Messi! So when he scored, it was not one player’s fault, it was just Messi. Before the games against Barcelona, Simeone never used Messi’s name. He always called him ‘the dwarf’, so when we were in front of him, we would not be afraid of him.”

During his time in La Liga, Barcelona legend Messi scored 32 goals in 42 games against Atletico Madrid.

Messi’s next match is a pre-season friendly for Inter Miami against El Salvador in January
