Fulham’s Marco Silva becomes the newest manager to rant about PL referees

Fulham manager Marco Silva may be at risk of an FA charge following an impassioned outburst directed at the match referees following his team’s defeat to Newcastle.

The St James’ Park saw Fulham suffer a 3-0 loss at the hands of Newcastle United, with Lewis Miley, Miguel Almiron, and Dan Burn scoring in the second half. In the first half, Raul Jimenez received a red card for a high challenge on Sean Longstaff.

Silva, however, contended that referee Samuel Barrott overlooked an elbow incident involving Jamaal Lascelles and Jimenez. He has accused the official of being swayed by the crowd’s influence.

Silva said: “In my opinion it was strange and poor performance from the referee from the first minute until the last. I’m not talking about the red card. But all the circumstances, the way he managed the game.

“He gave the first foul for Fulham in the 21st minute. It was really strange. All the challenges until the red card, on Fulham, were to keep going. (Challenges on Newcastle), everything was a foul.

“Before the red card, there was a clear elbow from Lascelles on Raul. Clear elbow. They go to VAR. It’s not even a foul. I’m not saying it should be a red card. They didn’t stop to check, it’s strange, but it is a clear foul.

“For a team to come to St. James’ Park, to handle the pressure, to face Newcastle. Their results speak for themselves. We have to be brave enough, we have to have experience. We felt it was a moment to match them.

“At the same time you need referees with experience. With ability to handle the pressure. In my opinion that didn’t happen.“

Following their defeat, Fulham slipped to the 11th position in the Premier League standings. Despite this setback, they had previously secured back-to-back victories with impressive 5-0 wins against both Nottingham Forest and West Ham. Chelsea, their West London rivals, climbed above them into the 10th spot after a 2-0 triumph over Sheffield United.
