Leverkusen set new Bundesliga record as they end the year in top spot

Bayer Leverkusen set a new record for unbeaten to start the season in German football after beating Bochum.

Leverkusen managed to beat Bochum with four goals on Wednesday to stay at the top of the Bundesliga table. Patrik Schick scored a hat trick and Victor Boniface scored the fourth goal.

Leverkusen stretched their unbeaten start to the season to 25 games across all competitions. They now hold the sole record in German professional men’s football. The previous record was achieved by SV Hamburg in the 1982-83 season, with 24 games. Xabi Alonso’s side has achieved 22 wins and three draws since the season began.

Leverkusen has 42 points after 16 Bundesliga matches, four points ahead of Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel’s side who defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 on Wednesday, has one game in hand. Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala scored for Bayern in their last game before the winter break.

Leverkusen have never won the Bundesliga, finishing runners-up five times.
