PSG allegedly lobbied Ballon d’Or chief to help Lionel Messi win award

Paris Saint-Germain has been accused of trying to influence the Ballon d’Or outcome in favour of Lionel Messi.

According to a report in Le Monde, PSG officials tried to gain support from Pascal Ferre, the former editor-in-chief of France Football and organiser of the Ballon d’Or. This report claims that the club officials were lobbying for Messi to win the Ballon d’Or in 2021.

Le Monde and Mediapart have reported Ferre received tickets for PSG matches and business-class flights on Qatar Airways.

The report states that PSG’s former communications director, Jean-Martial Ribes, has been under judicial investigation. A report by the General Inspectorate of the National Police from November 2023 says: “Ribes requested to obtain tickets for PSG football matches by journalists, politicians, elected officials, members of ministerial cabinets or the presidency, artists.”

Ribes is accused of trying to gain support from journalists, politicians, and officials through various favours. The investigation is still ongoing.

Ferre who is PSG’s current communications officer, has denied having had any involvement in favoring Messi to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or. The former director of France Football magazine says he voted for Robert Lewandowski in 2021.

Messi won his seventh in November 2021, a few months after joining PSG. He won another Ballon d’Or as an Inter Miami player in 2023. The Argentina legend left PSG at the end of the last season after his contract expired and joined Inter Miami.
