Bayern Munich will pay tribute to the life of Franz Beckenbauer before their home Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim on Friday night.
German and Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, died on Sunday aged 78.
A minute’s silence will be held before kick-off at the Allianz Arena. Beckenbauer’s own song ‘Gute Freunde’ will be played at the stadium as the players walk out and after Bayern’s possible goals.
Bayern players will warm up with Beckenbauer’s number five shirt and wear training jackets from his playing era. Bayern players will also wear special jerseys with ‘Danke Franz’ – ‘Thank you Franz’ – printed on them. Child mascots for both Bayern and Hoffenheim will be similarly dressed.
“FC Bayern is dedicating tonight’s match against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena to the memory of Franz Beckenbauer,” read a club statement.
“In addition to a minute’s silence, which will be held in all German stadiums on this matchday, and both teams wearing black armbands, the Kaiser will be honoured through numerous acts.”
A Beckenbauer banner will adorn the centre circle ahead of kick-off and videos in memory of him will be played on the screen. Just like the last few days, the Allianz Arena stadium will be illuminated with the words ‘Danke Franz’.
