Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has revealed the identity of the toughest player he has faced in his career – and it is not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League history after joining Liverpool in 2018. The 32-year-old Dutch player has won seven trophies at Anfield including the Champions League and Premier League.
The Liverpool defender has come up against some of the best players in the world, but he has picked a surprising choice as his toughest opponent.
Speaking to France Football,Van Dijk said: “I think that Olivier Giroud [is the toughest attacker I have played against]. Every time, you think you’ve got a hold of him, that you’ve got him well marked, but he always manages to score in one way or another: with his head, his foot, his knee. He has often scored against me (smiles).”
Van Dijk also mentioned Haaland, Jesus, and Aguero as other formidable opponents in his career.
“They all make your matches very difficult,” said Van Dijk.
Van Dijk and Liverpool will face Bournemouth on January 21 in the Premier League.
