Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo took responsibility for his team’s humiliating defeat against Villarreal in La Liga.
Barcelona suffered an embarrassing defeat at home after Villarreal beat them 3-5 at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Saturday night. The defending champions now is ten points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid after 21 matches.
Cancelo who returned to Barcelona’s squad after three weeks, made a costly mistake that led to Villarreal’s second goal.
Speaking at the post-match interview with La Liga, Cancelo said, “My performance today was a disaster. Tomorrow I will give everything in training to be at my best on Wednesday. We are a great team. The coach is not to blame. He did them well and I did not reciprocate. Has the League gone? Mathematically no, but it is very difficult.”
Cancelo who has joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City, added: “It’s our fault. My teammates played well, but on a personal level, it was one of the worst matches I have ever played in my life. We have a young team, sometimes we lack experience.”
Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season after Saturday’s defeat. Barcelona recently suffered a 4-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa final and a 4-2 loss against Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey.
