Atletico Madrid moved to third place in La Liga after a comfortable home win over Valencia on Sunday night.
Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 home win over Valencia thanks to goals from Samuel Lino and Memphis Depay.
Diego Simeone’s side now is in third place in La Liga with 44 points, level with Barcelona but ahead on goal difference. Girona is at the top, while Real Madrid is second on 54 points with one game less.
Atletico made a host of chances in the first half, but Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili kept the game leveled. However, Atletico finally broke the deadlock five minutes into first-half stoppage time. Lino scored for the home side after Antoine Griezmann found him with a superb pass.
Depay doubled Atletico’s lead in the 57th minute with a header from Nahuel Molina’s cross. The Dutch international could score another goal with a wonderful flick over a defender, but his effort landed on the roof of the net.
Valencia is in eighth place with 32 points, but they failed to trouble the hosts at the Metropolitano stadium.
Atletico’s new player Arthur Vermeeren was on the bench and Moise Kean who joined from Juventus also was in the stands.
