Roy Hodgson’s future at Crystal Palace uncertain following health issues

Roy Hodgson’s future as Crystal Palace manager remains uncertain amidst reports that the 76-year-old was contemplating taking a break from football after undergoing tests in the hospital.

Crystal Palace boss Hodgson fell ill during Thursday’s training session, leading the Premier League club to describe his condition as “stable” after undergoing additional medical assessments.

Consequently, Palace canceled Hodgson’s planned pre-match press conference ahead of their upcoming fixture against Everton on Monday night.

Alongside news of Hodgson’s health concerns, reports emerged suggesting Palace were poised to dismiss him, with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner being a leading candidate to succeed him.

There were suggestions that Hodgson intended to announce his resignation during Thursday’s press conference, fueling further speculation on Friday about the former England manager considering an indefinite hiatus from football.

When contacted by the news outlets, Palace indicated that there was no new information on the situation, with any updates expected to be communicated through the club’s official channels.

Hodgson was already supposed to step down from his role at Palace

Friday was a rest day for the Palace squad before their journey to Merseyside.

Hodgson received widespread support from his Premier League colleagues, who wished him a speedy recovery.

If Hodgson, in his second stint as the head of the south London club, requires more time off after his hospitalization, Ray Lewington and fellow assistant Paddy McCarthy are anticipated to assume control for the Everton match.

Palace currently occupies the 15th position in the table, maintaining a five-point buffer over the relegation zone ahead of this week’s Premier League matches.

In recent weeks, unhappy Eagles fans have unfurled banners wanting Hodgson’s sacking and expressing frustration with the club’s management.

Austrian Glasner led Frankfurt to Europa League triumph in 2022, winning over Rangers in Seville through a penalty shootout.

The 49-year-old, who has previously managed Wolfsburg, has been without a job since leaving the Bundesliga side last summer.
