Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen set new unbeaten record in German football

Bayer Leverkusen have set the record for the longest unbeaten run across all competitions in German football history.

Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 home victory over Mainz on Friday to go 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Xabi Alonso’s side now is the first German club that has not lost in 33 consecutive matches in all competitions.

Leverkusen broke the record set by Hansi Flick’s Bayern between 2019 and 2020. They have won 29 and drawn four of their 33 games this season

Granit Xhaka put Leverkusen ahead from 20 meters in the third minute, but Dominik Kohr’s header just five minutes later leveled things for Mainz. It was Xhaka’s first goal since joining the club from Arsenal last summer.

Robert Andrich scored the winning goal in the 68th after a mistake from Mainz keeper Robin Zentner. Mainz finished the match with 10 men after Jessic Ngankam was sent off for a foul on Xhaka.

Xabi Alonso’s team is at the top of the table with 61 points, Bayern Munich has 50 points and will face RB Leipzig on Saturday.
