Jude Bellingham handed two-game LaLiga ban for abusing referee

Jude Bellingham has been suspended for Real Madrid’s next two La Liga matches after he received a red card against Valencia last weekend.

Spain’s Competition Committee confirmed on Wednesday that Jude Bellingham has been banned for two La Liga games for “contemptuous or disrespectful attitudes towards a referee”.

The English midfielder misses upcoming La Liga games against Celta Vigo on March 10 and Osasuna on March 16. The 20-year-old Bellingham is La Liga’s top scorer with 16 goals.

Bellingham was sent off for arguing with referee Jesús Gil Manzano in the aftermath of Real Madrid’s controversial 2-2 draw at Valencia. Late Bellingham’s goal was ruled out by referee Jesús Gil Manzano because he had already blown his whistle moments before he scored.

The referee’s post-match report said Bellingham had shown an “aggressive attitude” and allegedly shouted “It’s a f—ing goal” repeatedly. Real Madrid appealed Bellingham’s red card by arguing that he had not displayed an aggressive attitude. The club denied that his words were offensive or insulting.

The Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee also fined Real Madrid €700 and Bellingham €600.

Real Madrid will host Leipzig in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 on Wednesday.
