Footballer Dani Alves to be freed from prison on bail after sexual assault conviction

Former Brazil and Barcelona footballer Dani Alves will be released from prison on bail for €1 million after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman.

A court in Spain sentenced Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison last month. Alves was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.

Alves’ lawyer Inés Guardiola has appealed the sentence, and he will be released from prison on bail following a hearing on Tuesday. He has been held in pre-trial detention since January 2023.

He told a bail hearing: “I believe in justice. I’m not going to run away and I will be at the disposal of the court until the end.”

The 40-year-old Alves must hand his Spanish and Brazilian passports, remain in Spain, and do weekly court check-ins. He also has been banned from going within 1,000 metres of his victim, her home, her place of work, or any other place she is known to frequent.

Alves’ lawyer argued that there was no risk of Alves fleeing the country or destroying evidence.

“To me, it’s a scandal that they let a person who they know can get a million euros in no time walk free,” the victim’s lawyer, Ester Garcia, told RAC1 radio station immediately after the ruling.

Garcia also said she was “outraged and dissatisfied” with the ruling, adding it was “a justice (system) for the rich” and that she would appeal.

The victim’s lawyer and the prosecution have three days to appeal Wednesday’s ruling.
