Uli Hoeness claims Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid all ‘working’ to hire Xabi Alonso

Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness says his club, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are all trying to hire Xabi Alonso as their next manager.

Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso as they seek a new manager for next season. The former Spanish midfielder also was linked with a move to his former club Real Madrid before Carlo Ancelotti extended his contract with the club until 2026.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen is ten points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with his side unbeaten in all competitions this season.

In an interview with German news outlet Ran Sport, Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness claimed all three big European clubs are ‘working’ to appoint Alonso.

“He’s [Alonso’s] proven that he can be a coach for the big time,” Hoeness said.

Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it.”

Hoeness said on Bayern’s managerial search: “There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don’t have a job or who are on sabbatical.

It’s not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things.”

Sky in Germany recently claimed Alonso prefers Bayern to Liverpool and the German giants have received a positive signal from him.

Alonso has a fixed exit clause in his contract of around £12.8m, but it could not be activated until the summer of 2025.
