Earlier this evening, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim officially announced the signing of Hungarian defender Attila Szalai.
For some time, German rumor mills have actively claimed that Hungarian defender Attila Szalai was too expensive for 1. FC Union Berlin, the club previously linked with him. However, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stepped in and showed their interest, ultimately securing the 25-year-old center back for a reported €15 million.
Following reports from multiple sources that the deal was completed, the German club finally confirmed the transfer earlier this evening. According to Germany’s Kicker Magazine, die Kraichgauer acquired Szalai from his Turkish club Fenerbahçe for approximately €12.3 million. With the addition of Szalai to their squad, along with John Anthony Brooks and Stanley Nsoki, Hoffenheim now boasts three left-footed center backs.
“It is our clear goal to further stabilize our defense and Attila has proven his qualities internationally,” TSG sporting director Alexander Rosen noted in a statement accompanying the signing, “Apart from that, the fans can look forward to a great guy with a wonderful charisma.”
“I had several options for my sporting future, but made a conscious decision to join TSG Hoffenheim,” the player himself added, “I really wanted to play in the Bundesliga and I’m convinced that it’s the right move for me.”
