Dortmund lose two crucial points in the title race in ‘wild’ Riverderby

Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic bemoaned the ‘wild’ derby with Schalke as it cost them two points in the title race

Edin Terzic expressed his disappointment with Borussia Dortmund’s involvement in an intense Revierderby match against Schalke, in which Schalke twice equalized and dealt a blow to Dortmund’s hopes of winning the title.

Dortmund were aiming to secure their ninth consecutive Bundesliga win and had put themselves in a strong position alongside Bayern Munich at the top of the table.

Terzic admits Dortmund got involved in Schalke’s ’emotional game’

Nico Schlotterbeck scored for Schalke in the 38th minute, putting them in a position of advantage. However, their lead was short-lived, as Marius Buelter equalized before Kenan Karaman scored to cancel out Raphael Guerreiro’s goal in the 60th minute. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

This was also the first time in five Revierderby matches that Dortmund failed to win. They are now two points behind Bayern Munich, who won 5-3 against Augsburg earlier in the day.

“Either we get involved with Schalke’s emotional and passionate game. Or we stay clear and try to win the game with football

“We said before the game that there were two options,” Terzic said.

“[Either] we get involved with Schalke’s emotional and passionate game, and then it gets tight. Or we stay clear and try to win the game with football.

“The Team showed that in the first half. We had a lot of good phases there, in which we controlled both the ball and the opponent. We were able to create a lot of clear chances.

“The players stopped that in the second half and then it got wild – just like Schalke wanted it to be. In the end we gave up the win and go home with a draw.”

The outcome of the match indicates that Schalke and Dortmund are still the only two Bundesliga teams who have not lost since the mid-season break. Thomas Reis’ men are only one point behind safety after remaining undefeated in seven consecutive games.
