Despite losing Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, Lothar Matthaus thinks this Bayern Munich team is the best in the club’s history
Nagelsmann’s Bayern Munich had a difficult start to the year 2023, but they are now picking up momentum as the season reaches its critical stages. They eliminated PSG from the Champions League with a 3-0 overall score and continued their impressive form in the Bundesliga by scoring five goals against Augsburg.
Ballon d’Or winner and Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus has praised Die Roten for having put together the “best squad of all time” and thinks there are 20 players who could potentially start in the team.
Matthaus backs Bayern to go all the way in the Champions League
Despite having lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona in the summer, Bayern are still the highest-scoring team in the German top flight, having scored 71 goals in just 24 games, giving them an average of almost three goals per game.
“If everyone is fit, this is now the best Bayern squad in terms of quality of all time. Bayern now have twenty potential starting eleven players. In my time there were 13, later 16, 17. However, today you can change five times,” he said to Bild.
“A year and a half or two years ago I criticized that the Bayern squad wasn’t so well positioned across the board. I don’t think it’s because of my criticism, but there has been a rethink. Bayern have been very active in the last two transfer windows, and I have praised Brazzo (Hasan Salihamidzic) for that,” he added.
“Bayern reacted to all the failures“
Matthaus believes that Bayern Munich are the favorites to win the Champions League. However, he admitted that clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City could pose problems.
“Bayern reacted to all the failures. With (Yan) Sommer on (Manuel) Neuer, with (Joao) Cancelo and (Dailey) Blind on (Noussair) Mazraoui and (Theo) Hernández.” he added.
“It’s not just big names that win the Champions League, but big teams. I already said before the games against Paris: Bayern is capable of winning the title again this season. You’re one of the favourites, but not the top favorite. Then there’s Real (Madrid) and (Manchester) City. And don’t underestimate Benfica, Lisbon and Napoli.”
