Xabi Alonso rules a return to Real Madrid as ‘too early’

Xabi Alonso has now addressed the speculation surrounding his potential appointment as the next Real Madrid manager after Carlo Ancelotti.

The former Spanish international, currently is in charge of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen since October 2022. Alonso has been connected to the Los Blancos role once Ancelotti’s contract concludes in 2024. Ancelotti himself recently praised Alonso’s football expertise and expressed his desire to see him manage Real Madrid someday.

Alonso has now commented on these discussions, stating that it is premature to make any assumptions since he has not engaged in any discussions with the Spanish club.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Alonso said, “It’s too early to talk about this, we’re in September, so it’s not an issue to discuss. Both the players and I know how football works, it’s not a problem for anyone, and we have not talked about it.”

Alonso’s tenure with Leverkusen has proven to be successful. Under his guidance, the club has achieved a win rate of over 50% in matches managed since October. Furthermore, Leverkusen currently sits atop the Bundesliga table with 14 points from six games.
