Joao Cancelo maintains that “his heart is in the right place” and his time at Bayern Munich has been constructive, despite finding it difficult to secure playing time
Joao Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan with a permanent purchase option during the January transfer window. But he has found it difficult to adapt to his new environment and has been out of favor under former manager Julian Nagelsmann.
After Thomas Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann as manager, Cancelo was still left on the bench for his first game against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
However, despite his difficulties in Germany, Cancelo is determined to improve. The fullback says he is working hard in training to change his situation. He also expressed his commitment to the team, saying that he can always be relied upon.
Joao Cancelo describes his time at Bayern ‘positive’
“I see my start at Bayern as positive. There’s always a certain adjustment period for footballers. That’s why I tried to integrate myself into the team as quickly as possible. To get to know the teammates & the system,” he told the official club website.
Amid rumors of a fall-out at parent club Manchester City, Cancelo added: “Sometimes it is said that I may not have a very simple personality. But my heart is in the right place. And you can always count on me. Everyone and everything at FC Bayern is focused on absolute success. Here you work really hard in every single training session – I really like this mentality. I’m happy to be here and to play for this great team.”
Tuchel gave Cancelo a chance to start in Bayern’s loss to Freiburg in the DFB-Pokal. But the full-back knows he must continue to show his worth in training. Bayern have strong competition for the full-back position, with Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies also vying for a spot.
Despite this, the club’s director, Hasan Salihamidzic, is confident in Cancelo’s abilities and believes he will have opportunities to play, describing him as a “top player.”
