Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer dies at 78

Germany legend and one of the greatest footballers of all time, Franz Beckenbauer has sadly passed away aged 78.

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at 78. Known as ‘Der Kaiser,’ Franz Beckenbauer achieved World Cup glory as both a captain in 1974 and a manager in 1990 with West Germany. Beckenbauer was among an elite group, including Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and France’s Didier Deschamps, who have secured World Cup victories both as players and managers.

Beckenbauer, who earned 103 caps for West Germany, secured victory in the European Championship in 1972. Der Kaiser achieved remarkable success at the club, winning three consecutive European Cups from 1974 to 1976 and clinching four Bundesliga titles.

Beckenbauer’s contributions included 582 appearances for Bayern. Additionally, he guided Bayern to a Bundesliga triumph in 1994 and a UEFA Cup victory in 1996 during his managerial tenure.

Der Kaiser impacted the game of football forever

A family statement read: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family.

“We ask that you be able to grieve in silence and refrain from asking any questions.”

“The message he [Beckenbauer] sent out was: ‘Don’t even try it. Coming out to face me is a waste of your time,” Charlton later said of their match-up.

But Beckenbauer gained prominence for innovating the role of a sweeper, often referred to as a “Libero,” positioning himself just behind the defensive line to handle any opposing players or balls that breached the defense.

His remarkable career included numerous individual accolades, securing two Ballon d’Or awards in 1972 and 1976, a notable achievement for a defender during that era and still a rarity today.
