Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes announces plans amid Xabi Alonso’s exit links

Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director of sport, Simon Rolfes, has confirmed his intention to remain at the club despite interest from Liverpool.

Liverpool has been in search of a long-term replacement for their former sporting director Michael Edwards, renowned for his role in identifying and signing players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson Becker.

Following Jorg Schmadtke’s departure from Liverpool at the end of the January 2024 transfer window, the club is now seeking its fourth sporting director in as many years. Schmadtke took over the position in May 2023 after Julian Ward’s short-lived tenure.

Rolfes, Leverkusen’s managing director of sport, has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant position. Since 2018, Rolfes has played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s recruitment efforts, overseeing a transformation from relegation candidates to title contenders.

In addition to his success in the transfer market, Rolfes played a part in hiring Xabi Alonso, who has brought about significant improvements in the club’s on-field performances. Alonso is now a managerial target for Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

Although Alonso is the frontrunner for the Liverpool managerial position, it is unlikely that Rolfes will accompany him if he moves to Merseyside.

Speaking to Kicker, Rolfes said of potentially leaving Leverkusen: “The fact that there is a lot of speculation about Bayer 04’s protagonists due to our current successes is part of the business.

“But that doesn’t change my direction. It’s not without reason that I only extended my contract in the autumn. I’m absolutely happy in Leverkusen in this constellation.”

Reports suggest that Liverpool have shown interest in Tim Steidten, the technical director of West Ham United, as they continue their search for a new sporting director. This interest comes amidst reports of tension brewing behind the scenes at London Stadium.
