Xavi claims that Sergi Roberto has unjustly been criticized following Cadiz win

Barcelona head coach Xavi thinks that Sergi Roberto is often unjustly criticized. Roberto, often used as a utility player, helped Barcelona go 8 points clear of Real Madrid in a 2-0 victory over Cadiz.

Sergi Roberto criticism is ‘unfair’

Ferran Torres and Sergi Roberto scored two goals for Barcelona as Blaugrana went 8 points clear of Real Madrid at the summit of the La Liga table. This was also Barcelona’s 17th clean sheet of the season in only 22 games.

Ahead of Barcelona’s trip to Old Trafford in the mid-week, Xavi spoke about Barcelona’s goalscorers Torres and Roberto. Xavi thought that Torres had “taken a step forward to gain confidence” by scoring.

“He is a player who can play various positions and he is fantastic,” Xavi said of Sergi Roberto.

“The criticism of him is very unfair,” Xavi said. “Of course I want him to renew, for me he offers a guarantee. I see him train and how he gives the performance and he is always criticized. It’s one of the most unfair situations I’ve ever seen in my life.”

While Barcelona kept a clean sheet, Cadiz had two goals disallowed and ter Stegen was forced into multiple saves. Xavi was cross with how much they gave away against Cadiz.

“We have given away a lot and I didn’t like it. Cadiz deserved a goal and Marc had to make extraordinary saves,” Xavi said.

“But the team met its goal and is maintaining its good run of results. I like the dynamic we have, we have kept a clean sheet and we continue to be eight points clear.”
