A section of Real Madrid fans racially abused David Alaba after they found out he voted for Messi instead of Benzema
David Alaba’s votes for last night’s FIFA Best Player award was revealed and the Austrian voted for Messi first, Benzema second and Mbappe third. This resulted in a strong backlash from Real Madrid fans.
Alaba says all of the Austria team must agree on a vote
David Alaba has come out with his reasoning for voting for Messi first. Los Blancos defender was abused online for his choices with some of the abuse racially charged. Madrid fans started a hashtag of #AlabaOut since he didn’t vote for Benzema ahead of Messi.
The Austrian, who captains his country, has since come out and explained his reasoning in a tweet.
“Everyone in the team council is able to vote and that’s how it’s decideD”
“Regarding FIFA The Best Award: The Austrian national team vote for this award as a team, not me alone,” he wrote. “Everyone in the team council is able to vote and that’s how it’s decided.
“Everyone knows, especially Karim, how much I admire him and his performances and I have often said that for me he is the best striker in the world, and that is still the case. Without doubt.”
Messi won his second FIFA Best award last night, two months after leading Argentina to a third World Cup title.
