UEFA denies RFEF’s unusual appeal to remove La Liga teams from competitions following Rubiales scandal

UEFA has declined the Spanish FA’s (RFEF) unusual appeal to remove La Liga teams from the organization regarding the Luis Rubiales controversy.

On Friday, the RFEF forwarded a letter to UEFA, requesting the expulsion of their membership from the governing body. This request was prompted by the government’s involvement in the Luis Rubiales controversy, which emerged after the president kissed Jenni Hermoso following the World Cup final.

FIFA suspended Rubiales as a result of this incident, and Hermoso has clarified that she did not provide consent for the kiss. Subsequently, prosecutors initiated a criminal investigation against the president.

Responding to this situation, the Spanish government urged Spain’s Sports Tribunal (TAD) to suspend Rubiales. The RFEF argues that such an action violates UEFA’s regulations pertaining to government interference in national football governing bodies.

Rubiales, along with RFEF general secretary Andreu Camps, seemed willing to employ the potential expulsion of Spanish teams from the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League as a means of pressuring the Spanish government not to remove Rubiales from his position.

Nonetheless, AS has conveyed that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has dismissed this appeal, symbolically distancing himself from Rubiales, who coincidentally holds the position of UEFA’s vice-president.

In alignment with UEFA’s stance, Victor Francos, the president of Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD), reassured Spanish clubs that the government is “operating in accordance with the existing regulations” and emphasized that “there is no threat to participation across any of the categories.”
