Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been issued a subpoena because of his involvement with RFEF Luis Rubiales and the way he paid them to host the Supercup in Saudi Arabia
It doesn’t go a day by when there isn’t a scandal happening in Spanish football. Yesterday the Negreira case took the headlines, and now Gerard Pique.
Pique’s scandal haunts Barcelona
After the El Caso Negreira scandal, the attention on Gerard Pique’s relationship with Luis Rubiales, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has faded from the headlines.
During the previous summer, it came to light that Kosmos, the company owned by Gerard Pique, earned millions from the agreement to host the Spanish Supercup in Saudi Arabia.
This was followed by the exposure of several conversations between Pique and Rubiales, where Pique sought favors from Rubiales. Consequently, an inquiry was initiated to investigate the matter for potential misconduct such as ‘disloyal administration and corruption between businesses’.
According to Cadena Cope, Pique has received a subpoena to provide the contracts signed between Kosmos and RFEF. He has been given a deadline of 10 days to provide the documents to the court.
It seems that the legal proceedings related to him and Rubiales‘ alleged involvement will take some time to be resolved. Despite both parties maintaining that everything was done legally, the ongoing cases, combined with Barcelona’s association with their former defender and the recent El Caso Negreira scandal, are damaging the public image of the Catalan club.
