Barcelona look to Villarreal youngster in their search for a top playmaker

Signs from Barcelona are suggesting that Xavi Hernandez is still considering adding another creative midfielder to his squad, with Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena in the pole position.

Recently, the remarkably low release clauses of Dani Olmo and Bernardo Silva became public knowledge. While Barcelona Sporting Director Deco will instruct his scouts to be proactive in identifying young talents before they gain international recognition, Barcelona remains interested in some of the brightest talents in the game.

According to MD, Xavi has shown interest in Alex Baena, a 22-year-old midfielder from Villarreal. Baena has made significant progress since breaking into Villarreal’s first team and is now one of their key assets.

Last season, he contributed with 12 goals and six assists in 48 appearances. Baena has already directly influenced three goals in the first four games of the current season, including a splendid curling strike against Barcelona.

Baena possesses outstanding vision, pinpoint passing, and a powerful shot. Recently, Villarreal extended his contract, tying him to the Yellow Submarine until 2028, with a release clause of €60m.

One of the main reasons Xavi is keen to recruit another creative midfielder is the recurrent injuries to Pedri. Former Golden Ball winner will once again miss the start of this season due to injuries.

Like Olmo and Silva, the initial price tag may not be an immediate obstacle, but unless significant sales happen, the prospects of acquiring Olmo, Baena, or Silva will remain challenging. Additionally, Villarreal is known for being tough negotiators, as Barcelona experienced during their discussions for Juan Foyth.
