Barcelona confirms Frankie de Jong’s long-term injury

Barcelona has officially acknowledged Frenkie de Jong’s ankle injury, raising concerns that the midfielder might not return until November.

De Jong was substituted for Gavi in the first half during Barcelona’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo in La Liga on Saturday. While the club has confirmed it is an ankle injury, they have not provided a specific timeline for his potential return.

They released a statement that read: “Tests carried out on the first team player Frenkie de Jong show that he has an injury to the tibiofibular syndesmosis in his right ankle. He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

However, Diario AS, a Spanish outlet, has suggested that the player might be sidelined for the next five to seven weeks. This implies that De Jong could potentially be absent for the first Clasico of the season against Real Madrid, scheduled for October 28.

De Jong is anticipated to be unavailable for the upcoming matches for Barcelona, including those against Real Mallorca and Sevilla. He may also have to skip the Champions League fixture against Porto on October 4, as well as the subsequent league game against Granada, which is scheduled to be the last fixture before the October international break.
