Gerard Pique backs Rafael Marquez to one day manage Barcelona

Gerard Pique, who previously played alongside Rafael Marquez at Barcelona, has expressed his support for Marquez to eventually manage the senior team of the Blaugrana.

Pique, who shared the pitch with the Mexican defender for two seasons from 2008 to 2010, has confidence in Marquez’s managerial capabilities. He believes that Marquez has the potential to lead a top club like Barcelona in the future. Pique also praised Marquez’s development and progress as a head coach.

Speaking to ESPN, Pique said, “Yes, for sure. Rafa is more than ready for a range of things [such as coaching Barcelona] because of the attitude he has, his knowledge of the game and his experience. He’s in a learning process as a coach right now and I am sure that in the future we will see him on a bench in La Liga. We will see if that is with Barca or another team, but he’s preparing excellently.”

Rafael Marquez, aged 44, took on the role of manager for Barcelona B last year. In his first season at the helm, he led the team to the Segunda Division play-offs by securing a fourth-place finish in Group 2. This marked a promising start to his managerial career with the club.

The Catalan giants are set to face their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, in the first Clasico of the season on Saturday.
