Witsel considers contract extension with Atletico Madrid

Axel Witsel, the star of Atletico Madrid, is considering extending his contract with the club in 2024.

At the beginning of the 2022/23 season, following his exit from Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund, Witsel joined Los Rojiblancos as a free transfer.

Upon his arrival in Madrid, the 34-year-old signed a 12-month contract, which he can extend if he starts or plays more than 45 minutes in 25 La Liga matches.

He established himself as a crucial part of Diego Simeone’s team in his debut campaign and subsequently activated that clause, hence remaining in the Spanish capital.

The 34-year-old continues to be a key player in Simeone’s 3-5-2 system as a revamped central defender, and he has the potential to extend his run for another year, until the 2024/25 season.

His current contract lacks a trigger clause, but he eagerly wants to extend his tenure in Madrid, where they will begin extension discussions in 2024.

He told reporters: “It’s the last year of my contract, let’s see what happens. I don’t have the key to the situation, but I’m very happy here.

“When I arrived here, I did so as a midfielder. But, in the end, after I spoke with ‘Cholo’, he was right. At my age, playing in this position, I can play for more years at this level in defence.”

Witsel, who has already retired from international duty with Belgium, actively uses the extra rest periods to extend his club career.
