Hailing Diego Simeone’s impact on his personal and professional life, Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez has put an end to speculation about his future by signing a contract extension until 2028.
The Uruguayan international Jose Gimenez and Simeone had expressed their joint desire to continue working together in the Spanish capital, and the club prioritized renewing the contract for the 28-year-old.
Despite injuries affecting his start to the 2023/24 season, Simeone has gradually reintroduced him into the starting XI in recent weeks, and he might start against Barcelona this weekend.
“I owe Simeone everything. He’s the coach who has taught me everything, who made me who I am today, to also achieve everything I have with my national team and to play in World Cups”, as per quotes from Marca.
Simeone prefers Axel Witsel and Mario Hermoso as his top two choices in a three-man defense, and Gimenez is vying for a starting position in Catalonia over Cesar Azpilicueta.
