Barcelona eye River Plate youngster Claudio Echeverri as their next transfer target

Barcelona will target the talented young player Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, with a reported transfer fee of €25 million.

Journalist Pablo Giralt reports that Barcelona intends to offer River Plate a sum of £21.7 million ($27.56 million) for the 17-year-old Claudio Echeverri. The attacking midfielder, previously associated with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain, played a starting role in River Plate’s 2-0 victory over Rosario Central, securing the Trofeo de Campeones on Friday night.

Echeverri, who will reach the age of 18 next month, is one of the emerging talents in Argentine football. He harbors aspirations of eventually joining Barcelona, having admired the Spanish giants since his childhood, particularly during Lionel Messi’s time with the club.

Earlier this month, the Barcelona boss said this about Echeverri: “The boy [Echeverri] is a talent. Beyond the hat-trick he scored against Brazil [at the U17 World Cup], he’s a difference-maker, but it’s something for the scouting department [to deal with].”

The January transfer window is set to open in slightly over a week. Whether Barcelona will pursue a move for him in the early months of 2024 remains uncertain.
