Barcelona manager Xavi alleges that Real Madrid is “conditioning” referees in Spain through their TV channel.
Xavi has expressed his belief that La Liga referees were favoring Madrid, creating challenges for Barcelona in the title race. Despite Barcelona’s own Caso Negreira scandal, Xavi maintains his claim, suggesting that Real Madrid exerts pressure on match officials via its TV channel.
He said at a press conference: “I already said that I don’t like that they [Madrid] condition the referees, but they continue to do it every week. The referees are going to whistle conditioned. The ‘Negreira case’ hasn’t helped us either, but that’s what we have to compete with. I agree one hundred percent with the president’s words. It’s a reality and we can’t deceive Barcelona fans.”
Xavi added: “Even a blind man can see what is happening. [Atletico Madrid boss Diego) Simeone said it the other day, that we are not stupid. Everyone is seeing it, but it is the media that has to say it.”
Barcelona is under significant pressure as they trail league leaders Real Madrid by 10 points. Xavi, who is set to leave the club this summer, is eager to salvage a season that currently appears to be unproductive for Barcelona.
Barcelona will resume La Liga action on Saturday evening with an away match against Alaves, followed by a home fixture against Granada on February 11. Before their return to Champions League football on February 21 for a last-16 double-header against Napoli, they will face Celta Vigo in the league four days earlier.
