Former Barcelona wonderkid Ilaix Moriba is determined to kickstart his career at Getafe, stating, “I want everyone to see the player they saw.”
A few years ago, Ilaix Moriba was regarded as one of the top talents emerging from La Masia. At just 18 years old, he made his breakthrough into the Barcelona first team under then-head coach Ronald Koeman. However, his stint in Catalonia didn’t last much longer.
Moriba joined RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, but his career has since taken a downward spiral. He struggled to make an impression at the Bundesliga side and also faced difficulties during an 18-month loan spell at Valencia.
After not making a single appearance for Leipzig in the first half of this season, Ilaix Moriba secured a loan move to Getafe in January, aiming to reignite his career. He addressed the media on Thursday after being officially unveiled by Los Azulones, according to Relevo.
“I have had mistakes and that is what life is about. Learning what one has done. I have a great love for the club of my life, Barcelona. I made mistakes and now I’m at a point where I want everyone to see the player they saw.
“I’m looking forward to starting to play here (at Getafe), for everyone to start respecting me as they did. Whether or not a correct decision was made (in leaving Barcelona), the truth is that I’m happy now to be here and I want to show that I am still the same and I want to work for it.” Said Ilaix Moriba.
Getafe could offer the ideal environment for Moriba to progress and fulfill the potential he displayed early in his career. At just 21 years old, he still has plenty of time on his side.
