La Liga chief Javier Tebas acknowledges that Lionel Messi was close to returning to Barcelona in 2024.
In 2023, Lionel Messi chose to move to the USA instead of returning to Barcelona.
After his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired at the end of the 2022/23 season, Messi was presented with three options to continue his career.
The Argentina captain decided against moving to the Saudi Pro League, with financial issues preventing a potential return to Barcelona.
Messi eventually reached an agreement to join Inter Miami as part of his strategy to continue playing in the future.
La Liga president Javier Tebas confirmed that Barcelona was in advanced talks with Messi about returning to Spain. However, both parties couldn’t reach an agreement.
“Because of Messi and Barcelona’s desire, I saw a return as close.” Said Javier Tebas, as per quotes from Kick, via the Daily Mirror.
“I saw it as possible. I’m sure Messi would have liked to retire at Barca.”
Messi is currently away on preseason training with Inter Miami as he prepares for the start of his first full campaign in Florida.
He scored 11 goals in his initial months since arriving in the USA, also winning a Leagues Cup title over Nashville in August.
