Dani Alves sentenced to four and half years in prison for sexual assualt

A Spanish court has sentenced Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison after finding him guilty of sexual assault.

The accusation against the former Brazil right-back Dani Alves involved an incident of ‘sexual assault by penetration’ at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. Prosecutors had sought a nine-year prison term along with ten years of probation and a compensation of €150,000.

Following his arrest in January 2023, Alves was detained in a Barcelona prison without bail. Throughout the interrogation and trial, his testimony underwent multiple changes.

Initially, he claimed to be unfamiliar with the victim, later asserting that they had engaged in consensual sexual activity. He also admitted to fearing that these allegations would lead to his wife leaving him.

Despite Alves’ varying accounts, the victim’s version of events remained consistent. Consequently, Spanish authorities found Alves guilty of sexual assault.

Alves ranks as Brazil’s third-most capped player in history, boasting 126 appearances for the Selecao. Only Neymar (128) and Cafu (142) have earned more caps for the national team. The 40-year-old’s professional career came to an abrupt end after Mexican club UNAM terminated his contract following his initial arrest in January 2023.

Throughout his career, Alves made 910 senior club appearances for Bahia, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and UNAM, scoring 67 goals.
