Atletico fan hospitalized after being assaulted by Bilbao ultras

An Atletico Madrid fan was assaulted by Athletic Bilbao fans ahead of their Copa del Rey clash.

The appropriate authorities deemed Thursday’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg clash between Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid as high risk. The reasons for this designation have now come to light, with multiple incidents occurring before kick-off at San Mames.

According to El Correo (via Relevo), a radical group began throwing objects at the police shortly after Los Leones’ arrival at the stadium. Athletic president Jon Uriarte condemned this incident.

“The reception has been very good. There was a crowd waiting for the team with shouts and applause. Unfortunately, people who are neither football fans nor anything else are often hidden in the crowds. They don’t care about anything and they don’t respect anything. We are against the attitude of these fans. Unfortunately they have been able to tarnish a reception that has been very nice.”

Additionally, reports have surfaced indicating that an Atleti fan was assaulted by members of an Athletic ultra group in a restaurant in Bilbao. The injured supporter has been hospitalized due to his injuries.

It’s always distressing to witness incidents like this. Football is the beautiful game, but ultimately, it’s just a game, and occurrences like these tarnish it in Spain.
