Following an incident that injured Lyon coach Fabio Grosso, a Marseille fan has been sentenced to four months in prison.
A 22-year-old man, captured on camera throwing stones at the Lyon bus on October 29, received the sentence on Thursday. The court was unable to determine if the object he threw caused the bus windows to break. The assailant responsible for the projectile that struck Fabio Grosso remains unknown.
Last month, fans of Marseille targeted the Lyon squad bus as it was heading to the Stade Vélodrome, hurling stones and other projectiles. The bus windows were smashed, and Fabio Grosso, Lyon’s coach, was hit in the face by a broken piece of glass. Grosso required multiple stitches and was left with a significant scar.
French club Lille announced last month that its fans were prohibited from traveling to Marseille due to concerns about potential crowd trouble following the incidents that led to the abandonment of the match between Marseille and Lyon.
Although the individual responsible for hurling stones at the Lyon bus received a four-month prison sentence, the punishment could have been more severe if he had been found guilty of causing bodily harm to any Lyon players or staff.
