Lyon eyes former Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli to replace Fabio Grosso

Lyon has contacted former Olympique de Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli regarding the managerial vacancy at the club.

According to L’Équipe, Lyon is actively searching for their third permanent manager this season. Laurent Blanc started the season with OL but had a brief tenure. He was subsequently replaced by Fabio Grosso, who secured only one win in seven games after taking charge in mid-September. Grosso’s managerial stint, the shortest in the club’s history, concluded last week.

Pierre Sage, currently serving on an interim basis, experienced his first defeat as the head of Les Gones against RC Lens. Despite the loss, there were grounds for optimism. However, Sage is not anticipated to be the long-term solution, and L’Équipe has disclosed that Lyon is in contact with Sampaoli, who has been without a job since departing Flamengo in September.

David Friio, whose arrival at Lyon was confirmed last Friday, collaborated with Sampaoli at Marseille. Friio has already initiated contact with his former colleague. Sampaoli himself has started observing Lyon‘s games this season in preparation and has compiled files on the club.

Sampaoli enjoys support from several key figures within Lyon. The Argentine previously collaborated with Matthieu Jean-Louis at Marseille and maintains a strong relationship with Juninho and John Textor. Although Textor had initially denied contact with Sampaoli while Grosso was still in charge, the former OM manager now appears to be the leading candidate for the permanent Lyon job.
