Kolo Muani: Proving worth beyond €90m price tag

Randal Kolo Muani aims to silence his doubters as he strives to justify his substantial transfer fee since joining Paris Saint-Germain.

In an interview with French magazine Onze Mondial, Kolo Muani confidently stated that he believes those who doubt him because of his €90 million ($97m) price tag from last summer’s transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt will ultimately retract their criticisms.

Kolo Muani said: “I have seen the criticism since I arrived at PSG. And the criticisms make us evolve, that’s good to hear. It’s like advice. You have to take criticism into account and improve so that these same criticisms disappear. It’s logical. Concerning the transfer price, it is important. Personally, it’s hard to digest.

“It’s another pressure for me to take on. I am digesting little by little. But I’ll tell you a secret: over time, people will say that it was a good price for Randal Kolo Muani. I know that at the moment people are saying: ‘€90m for Kolo Muani, what is that?’ I say: ‘They will see’, quite simply.”

During a breakout season with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022-23, Kolo Muani earned his place in France’s World Cup squad. Despite signing a long-term contract with PSG until 2028, his performance has been underwhelming, with just six starts in Ligue 1 and five goals, along with a disappointing record in the Champions League. This does not reflect the performance expected of a player who commanded such a high transfer fee.

Kolo Muani only scored five goals for PSG in Ligue 1

In comparison, Kylian Mbappe has scored four times as many league goals and already boasts 30 goals in all competitions. Nonetheless, Muani remains the club’s second top scorer with a total of eight goals.

Simply put, Kolo Muani needs to cement his place as a consistent starter to demonstrate his value in a PSG jersey. While he has started three of the club’s last four league games, he has done so as a winger rather than a central striker, a position currently occupied by Mbappe.

Looking ahead, there’s a possibility that Mbappe may not be with PSG next season, and Muani should seize the opportunity to position himself as the successor rather than risk being overshadowed by a new signing, should it occur.
