Dutch legend Ruud Gullit thinks that it’s van Dijk’s responsibility to stop Liverpool’s poor run of form
Liverpool’s defense has had loads of problems this season. Despite van Dijk being the best of Liverpool’s defenders, Dutch legend Ruud Gullit puts some of the blame for Liverpool’s recent poor form on van Dijk.
Gullit calls out van Dijk to take responsibility
Speaking on Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sports, the former midfielder said: “Since he came back after his injury, he has been defending passively. He was defending and blocking a bit like a skater. He just didn’t go full on it. And of course, he can have a bad period but he has to be a leader. If that defense is not doing well, it is his responsibility.”
Liverpool has conceded more goals this season than they have had all of last season. However, the blame can’t be put down on the feet of van Dijk alone.
The 31-year-old has had 4 partners this season in Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Nat Phillips. The fact that Jurgen Klopp hasn’t chosen a consistent partner for van Dijk, plays a role in their inconsistencies in the back.
