Liverpool confirm the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig

Liverpool has confirmed the completion of a £60 million ($76m) transfer, making Dominik Szoboszlai a player for the club.

According to reports, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has agreed to a five-year contract at Anfield, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2028. Jurgen Klopp had prioritized signing another creative player for the current transfer window, and he has successfully fulfilled that objective by securing the services of Dominik Szoboszlai. The deal triggered Szoboszlai’s €70m release clause at RB Leipzig, resulting in a significant transfer fee.

At one point, Newcastle was strongly linked with the Hungary international, but they ultimately withdrew from the competition to secure his highly sought-after signature. This decision cleared the way for Liverpool to acquire the player successfully. Liverpool has now secured a player who scored ten goals in 48 Leipzig appearances last season and earned 32 senior caps for his country.

Szoboszlai expressed his delight in his first interview for Liverpool’s official website, saying: “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better.

“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started. [A] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

Szoboszlai has assumed the No.8 shirt at Liverpool, a prestigious number previously donned by renowned players such as Steven Gerrard and Naby Keita. He is eager to make his competitive debut for the Reds in their opening match of the 2023-24 Premier League season, which will take place away at Chelsea on August 13.
