Julen Lopetegui leaves Wolves only nine months after he joined as manager

Wolves are interested in considering Gary O’Neil as a potential candidate to take over the managerial role from Lopetegui who has left the club nine months after taking the job.

Lopetegui assumed the head coach position at Wolves in November 2022 when the club found itself at the bottom of the Premier League standings.

Lopetegui’s discontent with the club’s lack of spending during the current summer transfer window has been evident, and he has faced challenges in changing the team’s performance after their 13th-place finish in the previous season.

Amidst this situation, Lopetegui has had to contend with the departure of several key players from the club, a consequence of Wolves’ efforts to align with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and manage their wage bill.

Following his sacking by Bournemouth in June, Gary O’Neil has remained without a managerial position, although his name has been linked to various opportunities over the summer.

Notably, O’Neil reached an impressive feat by securing Bournemouth’s position in the Premier League, getting 39 points and securing a 15th-place finish against considerable odds. However, despite this accomplishment, he ultimately could not retain his managerial role.

The Wolves leadership believes that O’Neil could potentially replicate a similar achievement by effectively managing limited resources and infusing much-needed morale into the club.
