Wilfried Gnonto adamant to force a move to Everton

Italian Wilfried Gnonto has informed Leeds United that he will not accompany the team for their Championship fixture as he wants a transfer to Everton.

Everton’s interest in the player has persisted for several months and recently resurfaced with reports of ongoing negotiations regarding personal terms.

Despite Leeds’ reluctance to part ways, both The Athletic and Sky Sport Italia report that Gnonto has taken matters into his own hands by declining to join the squad for the upcoming match against Birmingham, scheduled for tomorrow.

Gnonto’s absence was also notable in the 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town, which took place on Tuesday.

In an uncommon turn of events, Leeds issued a formal statement, openly attributing the complete breakdown of the situation to the actions of the Italian player.

Gnonto has informed Leeds about his intentions to join Everton

“Earlier this week, Willy Gnonto and his representatives were informed by the club that he would not be sold this summer.

“Following those conversations, Willy felt he was unable to play in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town.

“Despite training for the last two days, Willy has informed Daniel Farke that he still does not feel able to play this weekend and has not travelled to Birmingham for the game tomorrow.

“This is now an internal disciplinary matter and the club will make no further comment, other than to reiterate that Willy is not for sale.”

At just 19 years old, Gnonto has already earned 12 senior caps for Italy, finding the net once.

Having emerged from the Inter youth academy, he departed the club as a free agent in 2020, opting to join FC Zurich due to the absence of opportunities in the first team.

In September 2022, Leeds acquired him for a transfer fee of €4.5 million.
