Manchester United has decided that forward Mason Greenwood will depart from the club.
The Red Devils issued a statement stating that after a thorough assessment of the available evidence, they have determined that the material posted online did not present a complete picture, and Greenwood did not commit the offenses for which he was initially charged. However, Greenwood himself has publicly acknowledged his mistakes and is taking full responsibility for them.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
Since January 2022, Greenwood has been absent from training with the club. During that time, he faced arrest on allegations of rape, assault against a woman, and later on, suspicions of sexual assault and threats to kill. In October 2022, the forward was formally charged with attempted rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior. However, in February 2023, all charges against him were ultimately dismissed.
United has recently refuted claims that they have made a definitive decision regarding the player’s future. Some individuals have criticized the club’s official statement on their website, which addressed the ongoing investigation being conducted by the club.
“This [investigation] has drawn on extensive evidence and context, not in the public domain, and we have heard from numerous people with direct involvement or knowledge of the case,” United claimed at the time.
